James Lincoln Collier (born June 27, 1928 in New York ) is an American journalist, youth author and jazz author.

Collier came from a family of teachers and writers and graduated from Hamilton College in 1950. He served in the military in 1950/1 and was then a magazine editor in New York until 1958. His first book was published in 1960 and from the mid-1960s he wrote numerous books for children and young people (fiction and non-fiction), especially books for young people with historical content, some with his brother Christopher Collier ("Drama of American History" series, Benchmark) Books), a history professor. His 1974 book, My Brother Sam is Dead , set in the American Revolutionary War , was nominated for a National Book Award in 1975. He is also known for a number of jazz biographies by Louis Armstrong , Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman .

Collier is also a jazz trombonist.

He should not be confused with the British jazz musician and jazz writer Graham Collier .
