Walter James "Jim" McNerney, Jr. (born August 22, 1949 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is an American businessman. From June 30, 2005 and until June 30, 2015, he was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the US aviation company Boeing .

education

McNerney graduated from New Trier High School in 1967 and received his bachelor's degree in American studies from Yale University in 1971 . In 1975 he received his MBA from Harvard Business School .

Career career path

After graduating, McNerney began his career from 1975 to 1978 at Procter & Gamble in the marketing area as a brand manager . He then worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company from 1978 to 1982 , most recently as a senior manager . He spent the following 18 years at various subsidiaries of the General Electric group . There he was first General Manager at GE Mobile Communications (1982–1988) and then President of GE Information Services (1988–1989). Further positions at GE were:

  • GE Financial Services and GE Capital, 1989–1991, Executive Vice President
  • GE Electrical Distribution and Control, 1991–1992, President and CEO
  • GE Asia-Pacific, 1993-1995, President
  • GE Lighting, 1995-1997, President
  • GE Aircraft Engines, 1997-2000, President and CEO

From 2000 to 2005 he was Chairman and CEO of 3M before becoming CEO of Boeing in 2005 .

In 2007 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
