The Bentley Brooklands is a luxury sedan from the vehicle manufacturer Bentley Motors Limited , which was offered as Brooklands from 1992 to 1997 and as Brooklands R from 1996 to 1998 . Most of the car was handcrafted at the main factory in Crewe in England . Its name is based on the historic Brooklands racetrack in Weybridge, UK . The choice of name was intended to commemorate the brand's motorsport successes in the 1920s and 1930s. With a stronger differentiation from the corresponding Rolls-Royce model, the slumped sales figures for the predecessor Mulsanne should be absorbed, which was also achieved.
In keeping with and in addition to the sportier orientation, the automatic selector lever for the new, electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission was relocated from the steering column to the center console, and an electronically controlled shock absorber system with hydropneumatic rear axle level control, automatic air conditioning and electronically controlled instruments were integrated. In order to ensure sufficient traction despite the increased performance of the Brooklands R , a viscous locking differential was used.
