The Arnage is a 1998 to 2010 produced luxury car from Bentley and was last available in three versions:
- the Arnage R is the standard model
- the Arnage RL has a longer wheelbase and therefore more interior length
- the Arnage T is the sport version with a more powerful engine
All three in common is the engine: A 6.8 liter big V8 - turbo engine , which depending on the model has a maximum power of 336 kW to 373 kW.
Model history
The Arnage was introduced in 1998 when Bentley was still part of the Vickers Group together with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars . Shortly afterwards, Volkswagen took over the Bentley and Rolls-Royce plants. The rights to use the “Rolls-Royce” brand were not held by Vickers, but by the engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce plc. , which awarded the rights of use for automobiles to BMW . Therefore, Volkswagen was only able to use the brand name for a limited time.
The Arnage is named after the place of the same name on the Circuit de la Sarthe . The sister model Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph was discontinued after the takeover of Rolls-Royce by BMW in 2002 in favor of the Rolls-Royce Phantom .
In 2004 the vehicle received an external facelift .
The successor vehicle, known as the Mulsanne , was presented on September 16, 2009 as part of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance near Monterey (California) .
variants
Arnage Red Label
Compared to the Arnage from the 1999 model year, the Arnage Red Label (which can also be recognized by the red Bentley emblem on the bonnet and the wheels) has lowered the floor in the rear, creating more space for the passengers in the rear. Nevertheless, the tank could be enlarged, which now holds 100 liters, and many other changes served to stiffen the body. Finally, the Alpine navigation system with the folding monitor and parking aid were now standard. In addition, the front axle has been revised.
Arnage Green Label
In the model year 2000, the variant with the 4.4 liter engine was renamed to Arnage Green Label and the changes that were applied in the Red Label were also used here. At the end of 2001 the Green Label was discontinued due to lack of demand and due to the takeover by VW.
Arnage R / Arnage RL
In 2002 the model range was further refreshed. The Red Label has now become the Arnage R , or the Arnage RL.
Driving dynamics control was introduced with the ESP .
Arnage T
The Arnage T was the most powerful Bentley from the beginning of 2002 until the appearance of the Bentley Continental GT . In the interior, it was set apart from the other variants by the fluted aluminum panels around the instruments, in the upper wooden strips of the doors and a gear lever head as a ball on the selector lever of the automatic transmission.
Arnage LWF
In addition to the standard version, a long version with a wheelbase extended by 250 mm, based on the Arnage Red Label, came onto the market in model year 2000.
Arnage limousine
The Arnage sedan was built in small numbers. The pure chauffeur-driven vehicles are based on the Arnage RL and have a wheelbase that is 450 mm or 728 mm longer than the shortest model. The roof has also been increased by 100 mm on some vehicles.
Arnage Diamond Series
A special series was launched for the company's 60th anniversary in 2006; the Diamond Series is limited to sixty copies.
Arnage Final Series
At the end of the model term, the Arnage Final Series based on the Arnage T was launched.
Models with a different body shape
The Bentley Azure convertible , which came onto the market at the end of 2006, and the Bentley Brooklands coupé , which was first shown in 2007, are based on the Arnage .
drive
4.4 liter engine
Initially, the Arnage was only powered by a Cosworth-BMW 4.4-liter engine from the BMW M62 engine series with 260 kW (354 hp) and a maximum torque of 570 Nm at 2500 rpm.
6.75 liter engine
For the 2000 model year, i.e. after the 1999 factory holidays , the 6.75-liter V8 engine with an aluminum engine block , based on that of the predecessor Bentley Turbo RT , was used for the Arnage Red Label. The maximum power has been increased to 298 kW and the maximum torque to 830 Nm. The five-speed automatic transmission from ZF also had to make way for the four-speed automatic transmission 4L80E from GM, as only it could cope with the high torques.
The engine of the Arnage R was no longer charged with a large Garrett T4 turbocharger, but rather with two smaller Garrett T3 turbochargers, which responded even faster due to their smaller mass moment of inertia and reduce the power loss of the engine with a large turbocharger.
In the Arnage T the maximum power of the engine was first to 336 kW and the maximum torque of 875 Nm; raised to 373 kW in the model year, the maximum torque increased to 1000 Nm. From 2006, the maximum output in the Arnage R and Arnage RL models was also increased to 336 kW.
