The Bentley S2 (and the sports version Bentley S2 Continental derived from it ) was a luxury car model from Bentley Motors . From the predecessor Bentley S1 , the vehicle differed mainly in a new V8 engine and better air conditioning.

Standard model

The S2 presented at the beginning of October 1959, like the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II , was equipped with a new aluminum V8 engine instead of the previous six-cylinder in-line engine. With this new engine, the S2 was significantly faster than the previous vehicles. It also provided enough power reserves for the numerous ancillary units such as the new air conditioning system. The engine block - with wet liners - and cylinder heads of the new engine were made of cast aluminum, the displacement measured 6.2 liters (6230 cm³) with a bore of 104 and a stroke of 94 millimeters, the overhead valves were operated by hydraulic valve lifters from a central camshaft. The mixture was prepared by double carburettors with an automatic starter and the compression ratio was 8: 1. Power steering was now available as standard equipment, and a new dashboard and a new steering wheel were introduced. Some of the early S2 models still shipped with the old S1 dashboard.

The S2 was offered with a short wheel base (“short wheel base” 123 inches / 3124.2 mm) and a long wheel base (“long wheel base” 127 inches / 3225.8 mm). As standard, the vehicles were delivered with the factory body; however, there was still the option to purchase the chassis only. The sports version S2 Continental was only offered as a chassis. Of the S2 chassis (SWB and LWB) produced between 1959 and 1962 in 1920, most were delivered from the factory with the standard body as finished vehicles, the rest received body structures from Park Ward , Hooper , HJ Mulliner & Co. and James Young .

S2 Continental

As in the case of its predecessor, Bentley also offered a sporty special version called the Continental for the S2. Bentley only supplied the ready-to-drive chassis; the structure was contributed by independent body construction companies on behalf of customers. S2 bodies were available from Mulliner, James Young (each coupé and four-door sedan), Park Ward (convertible), Hooper (sedan) and Graber (coupé). A total of 388 copies of the S2 Continental were made.
