The Bentley Turbo R is a car of the Bentley brand built from 1985 to 1997 . It brought the ailing brand for the first time again larger sales figures and a significantly younger audience.
History and technology
The Turbo R was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1985 . Its predecessor, the Mulsanne Turbo , was supposed to remain in the range, but production was discontinued at the end of 1985 as demand fell very quickly. The performance and handling of the Bentley Turbo R was too clearly superior .
The sporty, tightly designed car achieved a top speed of around 230 km / h with 235 kW (320 hp). The "R" in the name stands for the English term "roadholding" and refers to the chassis, which finally corresponds to modern vehicles, with which the driving performance could not only be brought onto the road on flat and straight routes. The front and rear wheel suspensions, which were significantly modified compared to its predecessor, combined with a modified, sportier chassis set-up , alloy wheels with wider tires and an aerodynamically effective front spoiler gave the car the road holding of a sports car despite its curb weight of almost 2,400 kg .
In 1985 the Turbo R was delivered with the carburetor unit of the Mulsanne Turbo, in 1986 the performance-enhancing Bosch MK-Motronic and in 1990 a Bosch K-Motronic injection and ignition system finally came into use. ABS has now also become standard. From 1995 Zytek EMS3 engine management for injection and ignition processes.
In 1992 the 3-speed automatic machine was replaced by one with four stages.
From 1995, the Turbo R was uprated engine and a top speed of 250 km / h (electronically limited because of the tires) under the name New Turbo R delivered. Rolls-Royce specifically pointed out that this model was a standalone model. This variant was preceded by a performance-enhanced Turbo S from the end of 1994 .
The Turbo R achieved unusually high sales figures for the Bentley brand and became a bestseller in the history of the traditional English company. A total of around 6,000 vehicles were produced. It was not until 1997 that the model was replaced by the Bentley Turbo RT .
