The Bentley State Limousine is the state coach of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain , two of which were made by the car manufacturer Bentley , a Volkswagen brand. Elizabeth II received a copy on June 4, 2002 on the occasion of her golden jubilee from the throne of Franz-Josef Paefgen , the former CEO of Bentley, in Windsor Castle . She used it on the maiden voyage to St Paul's Cathedral . It is Bentley's first state car and, like the first Rolls-Royce state car , the Rolls-Royce Phantom IV , was a gift to the British royal family. The second copy is kept as a replacement vehicle. The value of the vehicles is around 11 million euros each.
technology
The four-speed Bentley State sedan is based on the Bentley Arnage , but is longer, wider and higher. The V8 - Twin Turbo engine with a displacement of 6.75 liters develops a maximum power output of 298 kW and a maximum torque of 835 Nm . Instead of the "Flying B" hood ornament used by Bentley , an interchangeable sculpture is used that is only attached when the queen uses the car. The sculpture of Saint George is exchanged for a standing lion when the carriage is on the road in Scotland .
Both specimens should be converted to flexible fuel vehicles by 2012 .
layout
In the lower area to just below the window line, the cars are painted wine red and above black. There are small emblems of the queen on the rear doors. The two copies produced have glass roofs. These can be covered in the rear area with opaque, black covers and then only leave a small rear window with round corners free. When the covers are not in use, they can be stored in the trunk. In addition to the four fixed seats, there are two foldable seats against the direction of travel behind the partition wall to the driver's area.
The project has been running under the name Project Diamond since 2000 . The handcrafted vehicles, which travel at an average speed of 14 km / h during parades , are designed to last for 25 years or 125,000 miles . One of the requirements of the royal family to the developers was that the windows should not be tinted in order to make the queen visible to the people. Unlike other state limousines, the windows can be fully lowered. This function is also used by the queen. The rear doors are " suicide doors " hinged at the back , which are supposed to make it easier to get out even with a hat.
use
The vehicles are mainly used for the Queen's official events and are accompanied by security vehicles. You have no license plates . The Queen's driver is Joe Last. Some of the queen's aristocratic state guests, such as the Saudi King Abdullah , were also transported by car.
