James Monaco

James F. Monaco (born November 15, 1942 in Flushing , New York , † November 25, 2019 in Manhattan , New York ) was an American film scholar , critic , author and publisher . He was the author of the standard work Film Understanding .

Life

Monaco taught at Columbia University and the City University of New York. Since 1967 he has worked as a film lecturer at the New School for Social Research . During this time Monaco created the book How to Read a Film , which was first published in 1977. This was followed by three further editions in 1980, 1999 and 2008. In 1980, it was published and edited by Hans-Michael Bock , under the title Film Understanding in German, in revised and expanded editions (1980, 1995, 2000, 2009). The standard work was u. a. also translated into Dutch, Italian, Czech and Turkish as well as into Chinese (unlicensed), Japanese and Korean. In 2001 Monaco also brought out a Multimedia Edition which, in addition to the books How to Read a Film and Dictionary of New Media, also contained two extensive anthologies with texts on film and media.

In 1982 Monaco founded an online database on the entertainment industry under the name Baseline . Baseline was acquired by The New York Times Company in 2006 . In 1992 he founded the UNET 2 Corporation , which he headed as company director.

In his publishing house Harbor Electronic Publishing, which is based in New York and in Sag Harbor, he published his own books a. a. 2011 also Exploring the Other Island. A seasonal guide to nature on Long Island by John Turner.
