James Hubert Ramsay, 17th Earl of Dalhousie , CStJ , DL (born January 17, 1948 ), is a British peer , investment banker and Lord Steward of the Household since 2009 .

He is the eldest son of Simon Ramsay, 16th Earl of Dalhousie and his wife Margaret Elisabeth Mary Stirling. As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title of Lord Ramsay from 1950 to 1999 .

Since October 3, 1973, he has been married to Marilyn Davina Butter, the second daughter of the former Lord Lieutenant of Perthshire and Perth and Kinross , Sir David Butter, with whom he has a son and two daughters.

When his father died in July 1999, he inherited his title of nobility as 17th Earl of Dalhousie and the chief dignity of the Ramsay clan . A hereditary seat in the House of Lords was associated with the titles of nobility . However, in November 1999, when the House of Lords Act 1999 came into force, the inheritance of parliamentary seats was abolished and Ramsay resigned from parliament.

Education and professional career

Ramsay received his education at Ampleforth College , a private school in North Yorkshire . Between 1968 and 1971 he served as 2nd Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards and has been a reservist since retiring from the Army . In the following years he held several management positions as an investment banker . For example, from 1981 to 1982 he was Director of Hambros Bank , now part of Société Générale , from 1982 to 1987 Executive Director of Enskilda Securities and from 1988 to 1991 Executive Director of Capel-Cure Myers Capital Management. In 2003 Ramsay held the public office of Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Angus . Ramsay was named Lord Steward of the Household in 2009, succeeding James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Abercorn .

social commitment

In addition to his professional and political activities, Ramsay is also involved in social projects. As President of the British Deer Society he campaigned for environmental protection and as a member of the Mental Health Foundation for health education and is a member of an association for the preservation of the HMS Unicorn .
