John James Shepherd (born June 2, 1884 in Bicknor , † July 9, 1954 in Aston , Herefordshire ) was a British athlete who won three medals in the tug of war between 1908 and 1920 at three Olympic Games .

At the Olympic Games in London in 1908 , Shepherd won the gold medal with the British team in the tug of war . The silver and bronze medals also went to British teams. Like all team members on all three British teams, Shepherd was a police officer.

Shepherd's crew was called the London City Police . In the final of the competition on July 18, 1908, the London City Police beat the second-placed team, titled as the Liverpool Police Team .

As one of only three tug-of-war men in the 1908 winning team, Shepherd was able to win a total of three medals in this competition in his Olympic career.

At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912, the London City Police failed to defend their title . Four years earlier, seven teams had registered for the competition, five of which also entered the competition, but only two of the five registered teams turned up in Stockholm. On July 8, 1912, the only competition that also represented the final took place. Shepherds London City Police were defeated by the Swedish opponent and took silver.

In the tug of war competition of the Olympic Games 1920 in Antwerp five teams competed. In the final on August 19, 1920, Shepherd and this time the only British team decided the fight for the gold medal for themselves. The Netherlands lost in two rounds.
