James Stallworth (born April 29, 1971 in Tulare ) is an American long jumper .

Career

Already at the age of 12 he managed to attract the attention of Sports Illustrated with a new national record in pentathlon (shot put, hurdles, long jump, 50 meters, 400 meters) .

At Tulare Union High School , Stallworth was successful in three sports: American football , basketball, and track and field . In 1989 he set a new, still valid National Federation of State High School Associations record in the long jump with 8.05 meters . With these achievements he qualified for the Junior World Championships in 1990 in Plovdiv . Here he set a still valid Junior World Championship record with a jump of 8.20 meters in qualification. He also won gold in the sprint relay and bronze over 200 meters.

Then was in sight for the team of the United States for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona . But his career took a different turn. In 1991 he sold drugs to undercover police officers and was subsequently imprisoned. According to his own statements, he did not begin to take drugs until he was in prison, and financed this addiction through various violations of the law.

In 1999 he started a comeback attempt after a few prison stays. Despite almost nine years of abstinence from sports, he managed to jump 7.92 meters, but did not qualify for the Olympic Games . The death of his mother caused another drug relapse. However, he has not taken any drugs since 2014.
