James Stuart, 1st Baronet (of Bute)
Sir James Stuart, 1st Baronet († 1662 ) was a Scottish nobleman and politician .
He came from a bastard line of the House of Stewart , who had held the inheritance of sheriff of County Bute since the 15th century ( see Stuarts of Bute ). He was the son and heir of Sir John Stuart, lord of the Ardmaleish on the Isle of Bute , sheriff of Bute, and his wife Elizabeth Hepburn. His father had changed the spelling of his family name from “Steward” to “Stuart”, in keeping with the zeitgeist.
When his father died on March 31, 1619, he inherited him and succeeded him as sheriff of Bute. On March 28, 1627 he acquired a hereditary nobility in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia as Baronet , of Bute.
During the civil war he sided with the royalists . In 1644 and 1645 he was MP for Bute in the Scottish Parliament .
He married Grizel Campbell, daughter of Sir Dugald Campbell, 1st Baronet (of Auchinbreck ). He had three children with her:
- Sir Dugald Stuart, 2nd Baronet (of Bute) († around 1670);
- Jean Stuart ⚭ Angus Campbell, 6th Laird of Skipness ;
- Sir Robert Stuart, 1st Baronet (of Tillicoultry ) (c. 1655-1710).
