James Thomas, 1st Viscount Cilcennin

James Purdon Lewes Thomas, 1st Viscount Cilcennin (born October 13, 1903 , † July 13, 1960 ) was a British Conservative Party politician . From 1951 to 1956 he was First Lord of the Admiralty .

Life

He received his education at the rugby school ; he then studied at Oriel College , Oxford . From 1929 to 1931 he was private secretary to Stanley Baldwin , chairman of the Conservative Party. In 1931 he was a Member of Parliament for the Hereford District . Between 1932 and 1935 he was Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to James Henry Thomas in the Dominion Ministry, later Colonial Ministry, then in 19936 there for William Ormsby-Gore and from 1937 to 1938 for Anthony Eden in the State Department .

In 1939 he rejoined government as Lord of the Treasury , an office he held when Winston Churchill became Prime Minister . In 1943 he became Treasurer of the Admiralty and in 1951 First Lord of the Admiralty. This he remained until 1956. In 1955 he was appointed Viscount Cilcennin , of Hereford in the County of Hereford .

In 1960 Thomas died at the age of 56. He was unmarried. The title of Viscount Cilcennin then expired.
