James Turberville

James Turberville (* in Bere Regis , Dorset ; † November 1, 1559 ) was an English Roman Catholic bishop .

Turberville was born to John Turberville and his wife Isabella, daughter of John Cheverell. His father was the great-grandson of Sir Robert Turberville .

He was educated at Winchester College and in 1512 Fellow of New College , Oxford . On June 17, 1516 he did his bachelor's degree and on June 26, 1520 he received his doctorate abroad. This was recognized on June 1, 1532. From 1521 to 1524 Tabellio was or Chancellor of Oxford University . In 1541 he became principal of Hartfield , Sussex.

Turberville was named Bishop of Exeter on June 21, 1555 . On September 8, 1555 consecrated Edmund Bonner , Bishop of London, it was assisted by Thomas Thirlby , Bishop of Ely , and Maurice Griffith , Bishop of Rochester , in London bishop. In 1559 he was deposed by Queen Elizabeth I because he refused to take the Supreme Oath. He was replaced by an Anglican successor.
