James Welch

James Welch (born November 18, 1940 in Browning , Montana , † August 4, 2003 in Missoula , Montana) was a Native American writer.

Life

James Welch's father was of the Blackfoot tribe , his mother that of the Gros Ventre Indians. Welch grew up on the Blackfoot and Fort Belknap Reservations . He studied at the University of Minnesota and at the University of Montana - Missoula with Richard Hugo . He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and then continued on with the University of Montana Masters program.

In his poems and novels, Welch addresses the conflicts with contemporary American culture and attempts to regain Indian identity through anchoring it in tribal and family history.
