Jamil Haddad

Jamil Haddad (born April 2, 1926 in Rio de Janeiro , † December 11, 2009 there ) was a Brazilian politician .

biography

After attending school, Haddad studied medicine at the Universidade do Brasil, now the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), which he graduated in 1949. He then worked as an orthopedic surgeon.

He began his political career in 1962 when he was elected member of the parliament of the state of Rio de Janeiro . In 1982 he was elected senator and in this capacity was also a member of the Constituent Assembly (Assembleia Constituinte) during the final phase of the military dictatorship . In 1985 he was one of the founders of the Partido Socialista Brasileiro (PSB), which elected him honorary president in 1988.

During the presidency of Itamar Franco (October 1992 to December 1994), Haddad was Minister of Health (Ministro da Saúde). During his term of office, in particular, the law on generics (Decreto dos medicamentos genéricos) was passed.
