Thubten Jampel Yeshe Tenpe Gyeltshen ( Tib . : thub bstan 'jam dpal ye shes bstan pa'i rgyal mtshan ; * 1912/1919 in Dagpo ; † 1947 in Lhasa ) was the 5th Radreng Rinpoche of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism and " Regent of Tibet "(Tib .: sde srid ;" Desi ") between 1934 and 1941.

Life

Jampel Yeshe Gyeltshen was recognized by the 13th Dalai Lama as "Radreng Rinpoche". After the death of the 13th Dalai Lama in 1934 he succeeded him as “Regent of Tibet” and held this office until 1941. In 1935 he was instrumental in finding the 14th Dalai Lama , and later he led his enthronement ceremony. In 1936/37 the 5th Radreng Rinpoche received members of the embassy of the British Political Officer Basil Gould (1883-1956) in Lhasa . In 1937 he received Theos Casimir Bernard , one of the first western researchers of Tibetan Buddhism. Furthermore, he had an official representation of the Kuomintang set up in Lhasa and visited the Samye Monastery . In 1938/39, the Tibetan government allowed the German Tibet Expedition Ernst Schäfer, despite the British ' concerns .

After Jampel Yeshe Gyeltshen had asked twice during his tenure to be allowed to resign from the office of regent of Tibet, he did so in 1941. His successor was the 3rd Tagdrag Trülku Ngawang Sungrab Thutob (1874-1952).

1944 returned the 5th Radreng Rinpoche for a retreat in the monastery Radreng back to Lhasa. There he was accused of corruption by members of the "Kashag" (Council of Ministers) of the then Tibetan government, Ganden Phodrang , and, despite his monastic vows, he had a relationship with his sister-in-law. Defenders of the 5th Radreng Rinpoche argue that the allegations were made by members of the Kashag because of his interest in the teachings of the Nyingmapa and for political reasons. The events in this context as "Radreng- intrigue " ( reting Conspiracy known) and have nearly led to civil war in Tibet.

In 1947 Jampel Yeshe Gyeltshen was arrested. In the same year he presumably died of poison after being mistreated in the prison under the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Radreng Monastery was sacked by Tibetan troops.
