Jan Śniadecki (born August 29, 1756 in Żnin , Poland , † November 9, 1830 in Jašiūnai near Vilnius ), brother of the chemist Jędrzej Śniadecki , was a Polish mathematician and astronomer .

After attending school in Trzemeszno, Śniadecki studied mathematics and physics at the Lubrański Academy and the University of Kraków and continued his education abroad from 1778 to 1781, including in Paris . He later became a professor of mathematics in Cracow, and from 1803 in Vilnius. From 1807 to 1815 he was the rector of Vilnius University . In 1815 he went into retirement.

In addition to astronomical and mathematical treatises, Śniadecki wrote a spherical trigonometry (1807; German von Feldt, Leipzig 1828). In philosophy he advocated English empiricism , against German philosophy and especially against Kant . His rectorate speeches, several biographies, for example about Nicolaus Copernicus and Hugo Kołłątaj , show him as a strict purist and opponent of all romanticism .
