Jan Bělehrádek

Jan Bělehrádek (born December 18, 1896 in Prague , † May 8, 1980 in London ) was a Czech doctor, biologist, professor, dean and a personality of Czechoslovak political and social life.

Life

The son of the educator František Bělehrádek received his doctorate in 1922 at the medical faculty of Charles University in Prague. Until October 1923 he worked as an assistant at the university and later at the biological institute in Brno , where he completed his habilitation in general biology in 1925. He was appointed associate professor in 1927, four years later as full professor in the field of biology. In between he worked in 1929 as a research assistant at King's College in London . In 1934 he was appointed director of the Albertov Biological Institute in Prague. He held a professorship at Charles University, where he served as dean from 1937 to 1938. On September 1, 1938, he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in Pankrác prison. After his release he hid in the sanatorium in Pleš until 1945 . He was discovered shortly before the end of the war and deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp . After the liberation of Czechoslovakia , he was appointed rector of Charles University and was elected as a member of the National Assembly by the Czech Social Democratic Party . In 1949 he started working for UNESCO in Paris , but was dismissed in 1956 under pressure from the Czechoslovak communist government. He went to London and worked as a scientist at Middlesex Medical School until his retirement . Shortly before his death, he confessed to the legacy of Jan Hus and joined the London Moravian Brethren , a religious community that is closest to the teaching of the Bohemian Brethren .
