Jan Barnard
Jan Barnard (actually Johannes Henrikus Barnard; born October 21, 1929 in Lichtenburg ; † October 21, 2012 in Pretoria ) was a South African marathon runner .
In 1954 he won a marathon in Port Elizabeth in 2:25:32 h and won silver at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver . The following year he was South African marathon champion.
In 1956 he won in Port Elizabeth with his personal best of 2:21:38 h and defended his championship title. At the Olympic Games in Melbourne , he did not reach the goal.
In 1958, his third national championship was followed by a silver medal at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff .
He was three times the South African champion over six miles (1955, 1956, 1958) and five times in cross country (1953, 1955, 1956, 1961, 1963).
