Maria Glümer , née Marie Chlum , married Maria Marton , (born July 3, 1867 in Vienna , † November 17, 1925 in Munich ) was an Austrian theater actress . She and Arthur Schnitzler had a conflicted love affair, the traces of which can be found in Schnitzler's poetry.

Life

origin

Marie Glümer was the second of three children of the official in the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Finance Franz Chlum and his wife Aloisia born. Kauba born. The parents came from the Czech petty bourgeoisie who immigrated to Vienna. Maria's sister Auguste, born in 1862, will be with her all her life. In 1873 Franz Chlum died of "vomiting diarrhea". It can be assumed that, after elementary school, she attended secondary private schools that were based on the curriculum for secondary schools. She was proficient in English to such an extent that she was able to gain first stage experience on an English-speaking amateur stage. She attended the drama school of the Vienna Conservatory and Otto's theater school.

Stage career

In 1890 she was engaged at the kk Landestheater Salzburg as "cheerful naive". The following summer she played in Baden near Vienna. The theater was directed by Schnitzler's friend Richard Tausenau . This was followed by an engagement at the Deutsches Volkstheater in Vienna , where she could not assert herself. Then the series of engagements in the provinces began: St. Gallen-Winterthur (1892), Düsseldorf (1893), Krefeld (1894), Cologne (1895). After an engagement in Graz, she was committed to the Vienna Carltheater for two years .

Finally, she followed the example of many actors who switch between Vienna and Berlin stages and went to the Lessing Theater and the New Theater in Berlin . She entered into a love affair with Paul Martin Blaustein, which led to their marriage in 1902. As a result, Marie Glümer becomes a Hungarian citizen. Blaustein, who wanted to design the theater based on Max Reinhardt's example , failed. In the bankruptcy, Marie Glümer and her sister Auguste lost their savings. When the child Hans Blaustein was born in July 1903, the couple were already living apart. In 1914, Blaustein was adopted and took the name Marton, so that Marie Glümer became Maria Marton. The marriage was only divorced during the war. Paul Martin Marton was deported to Kiev in 1942, from where he never returned.

From September 1908 Marie Glümer played at the Residenztheater in Munich , especially in pieces by Schnitzler. During the war, Marie Glümer and Auguste Chlum got into dire straits. Schnitzler supported her occasionally. After 1922 she was barely able to play. Her suicide prevented her from losing her physical and mental strength.
