Johannes "Jan" Ate Eildert Buiskool (born September 15, 1899 in Koedijk , Province of Noord-Holland , † October 30, 1960 in Gorssel , Province of Gelderland ) was a Dutch lawyer and colonial official who was Prime Minister of Suriname between 1951 and 1952 .

Life

Johannes “Jan” Ate Eildert Buiskool spent his childhood in Suriname, where his father Hendrik Buiskool worked as a pastor between 1904 and 1911. After attending school in Den Helder , he completed a law degree at the Universiteit van Amsterdam , which he completed in July 1925 with the doctoraal exam . He then worked as a lawyer and later as a judge. In 1945 he went to Suriname, where he was initially President of the Court of Justice (Hof van Justitie) and Minister of various departments. He was chairman of the Surinamese delegation in the negotiations that began on January 27, 1948 in The Hague , which on September 20, 1948 led to Suriname initially becoming an equal part of the Netherlands as part of an interim settlement . He wrote the preliminary draft of the statute and also worked on the Surinamese constitutional law.

In April 1951 Buiskool became Minister for General Affairs (Minister van Algemene Zaken) and held this position until September 1954. As the successor to Jacques Adam Drielsma , he took over the office of Prime Minister of Suriname (Minister-President) on June 4, 1951 and had held this position until he was replaced by Adriaan Alberga on September 6, 1952. As such, he was also head of the delegation at the conference that began on April 3, 1952 in The Hague, which led to the formal adoption of the statute in 1954, giving Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles the status of an equal and self-governing status after the expiry of the six-year interim arrangement Part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands received. After the end of his term of office he returned to the Netherlands and worked as a judge again.
