Jan Egbert de Vries

Jan Egbert de Vries (born May 4, 1944 in Strijen ) is a Dutch physician and immunologist. He is the holder of the Wilhelm Exner Medal .

Life

Jan de Vries studied at the University of Utrecht and graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a doctorate in medicine in the field of immunology in 1976 . After two years in John Mendelsohn's laboratory at the University of California , he was appointed head of the Immunology Department of the National Cancer Research Institute in Amsterdam in 1979 .

Act

He discovered that T lymphocytes from melanoma patients could destroy their own tumor cells in cell culture. These observations formed the basis for clinical vaccination trials for the treatment of certain types of cancer. In 1988 de Vries moved to the biotechnology company DNAX of Nobel Prize winners Paul Berg and Arthur Kornberg in Palo Alto . In a number of publications he showed that IL-4 and IL-13 are the main triggers for allergic diseases. In 1997 de Vries joined Novartis .

Awards

In 2005 de Vries was awarded the Wilhelm Exner Medal .
