Jan Joosten (biblical scholar)

Jan Joosten (born May 17, 1959 in Ekeren, Belgium ) is a Belgian biblical scholar. Since 2014 he has been Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford University ; before that he was professor of the Old Testament at the University of Strasbourg . He was also a member of the Society of Biblical Literature until June 2020 .

In June 2020, he was found guilty of possession of child pornographic images and was given leave of absence from his professorship in Oxford.

academic career

Joosten received his PhD in Brussels in 1981. His main research interests are the Septuagint , Syrian Bible texts, Biblical Qumran manuscripts and a famous harmony of the gospels of antiquity, the Diatessaron . In addition to his work as a biblical scholar, he worked as a pastor from 1988 to 1994 .

Guilty verdict on child pornography

On June 18, 2020, Joosten was sentenced to one year imprisonment by the criminal court in Saverne (Bas-Rhin) and placed on the list of sex criminals because he had 28,000 child pornography pictures and videos. These included depictions of raped children. Joosten confessed to the crimes that went back to 2014. The material was discovered by the Strasbourg LION cyber police (laboratoire d'investigation opérationnelle du numérique) as part of a long investigation.
