Jan Chalice

Jan Kelch (born May 22, 1939 in Berlin ; † September 25, 2017 there ) was a German art historian .

Kelch was director of the Gemäldegalerie Berlin from 1996 to 2004 . Kelch was best known as an expert in Flemish and Dutch painting. In 1998 Kelch was able to move into the new building at the Berlin Kulturforum with the Gemäldegalerie .

Life

Jan Kelch studied art history at the Free University of Berlin and in Munich . He did his doctorate at the Free University of Berlin. After completing his doctorate, he did research in the Netherlands, was an assistant professor at the Free University of Berlin and a visiting professor in Berkeley (California) . He then became curator and later chief curator for Flemish and Dutch painting at the Gemäldegalerie Berlin.

Kelch was the curator of the Kaiser Friedrich Museum Association , the Streit Foundation Berlin and the Saint Matthew Foundation Berlin .
