Jan Kropholler

Jan Kropholler (born August 23, 1938 in Dresden , † January 16, 2009 in Hamburg ) was a German legal scholar . From 1967 to 2003 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law and from 1990 to 2003 he held a chair at the University of Hamburg .

Life

Kropholler was born on August 23, 1938, the only child of Hermine and Alexander Kropholler in Dresden and grew up in Hanover. He received his doctorate in 1965 from the University of Munich . From 1967 he worked initially as a research assistant and later as a consultant at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg, of which he was a member until his retirement in 2003. In 1974 he received his habilitation from the law faculty of the University of Munich and in 1980 was offered a chair for civil law, international private law and comparative law at the University of Passau , which he refused. In 1986 he received his habilitation in Hamburg and since 1990 has been a professor at the University of Hamburg. From 1962 until his death on January 16, 2009, Kropholler was with Bärbel, b. Fischer, married and had a son, Alexander, b. 1975.

Among other things, he was a member of the German Council for International Private Law (since 1980), the Scientific Association for International Procedural Law and the German Society for International Law.

Kropholler's research interests were international private and procedural law , European civil procedural law and international uniform law. He was a member of the editorial team of Rabel's Journal for Foreign and International Private Law and was responsible for the collection of decisions on German case law in the field of private international law.
