Jan Mládek

Jan Mládek (born June 1, 1960 in Jindřichův Hradec ) is a Czech economist and politician of the social democratic party ČSSD . From 2005 to 2006 he was Minister of Agriculture in the Jiří Paroubek government and from January 2014 to February 2017 Minister of Industry and Trade in the Bohuslav Sobotka government .

life and career

In 1983 Mládek graduated from the University of Economics in Prague . Then in 1985–1990 he studied at the Forecasting Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic , where he was awarded the degree of candidate of science in April 1990. He also studied mathematics and physics at the Charles University in Prague for two years (1987–1989) . He is married and has five children.

In 1991 he worked as an assistant at the Department of Economics at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University. From 1991–1992 he worked as an advisor to the federal minister of economics and later as his deputy. In the years 1992–1995 Mládek worked as an external advisor to the Minister for Industry and Trade. Between 1993 and 1998 he worked with the Central European University in Prague and Budapest on economic studies on privatization in post-communist European countries. From 1998–1999 he was Deputy State Secretary to the Czech Prime Minister responsible for economic policy and from 1999 to May 2001 he was the first Deputy Minister of Finance. Between 1999 and 2001 he was Vice Governor of the International Monetary Fund for the Czech Republic. In the 2002 election , Mládek was elected to the House of Representatives for the social democratic party ČSSD . He was a member of the Budget Committee and from 2002-2004 he was also active in the Foreign Affairs Committee. In 2005 he resigned from his office.

In the ČSSD he was the chairman of the party's economic policy committee. Mládek was Minister of Agriculture in the Paroubek government from 2005 to 2006 and has been Minister of Industry and Trade since January 29, 2014. In 2017 Mládek came under public criticism. He defended the high phone roaming charges for phone calls abroad by saying that mobile phone roaming is an elitist issue that only affects five percent of the population and whoever wants phone tariffs like those in Poland should emigrate to Poland. He was then dismissed as a minister.
