Jan Oelofse

Jan Oelofse ( January 1934 - October 15, 2012 ) was a zoo keeper and conservationist .

Life

Oelofse grew up in Namibia and later moved to East Africa . There he worked for "Tanganyika Game Limited" and began his professional career as a wild catcher under Willie de Beer. During this activity he mostly caught animals for European zoos and thus gained experience in dealing with wild animals for his later life.

He worked for the film production company Paramount Pictures in the 1960s and was responsible for catching, training and caring for the animals that appeared in the classic film Hatari! were used. In 1964 he went back to Africa and took on a position as chief officer of the wild catch at the Natal Nature Conservation Agency in Southeast Africa. Here, when the grass capacities were overwhelmed, he advocated the gentle relocation of the animals to other game reserves and parks and optimized the fishing methods with the use of helicopters.

In 1975 he founded the Okonjati Wildlife Sanctuary to protect the animals there. Oelofse hosted the peace talks on Namibia's independence in 1989 .
