Jan Rosen (* 1854 in Warsaw ; † 1936 there ) was a Polish battle painter .

life and career

Jan Rosen came from a Jewish family who had converted to the Evangelical Augsburg denomination. As a youth he learned drawing in Dresden from Heinrich Redlich and in Warsaw from Franciszek Kostrzewski . He later studied painting in Munich at the Academy of Fine Arts and privately with Josef Brandt , and at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris with Jean-Léon Gérôme . He also lived in Lausanne .

His main interest was battle painting. His painting "Army parade in Warsaw in front of Grand Duke Constantine in 1824" was acquired by the St. Petersburg court and in 1891 he was appointed court painter to the Tsar.

It was not until 1921 that he settled in Warsaw. He was buried in the Evangelical Augsburg cemetery in Warsaw.

His son, the painter Jan Henryk Rosen (born February 25, 1891 in Warsaw, † August 22, 1982 in Arlington, USA) created wall paintings in the Armenian Cathedral in Lviv .
