Jan Sierada
Jan Sierada (born May 1, 1879 in Zadźwiej , Belarus ; † after November 19, 1943 ) was a Belarusian politician and the first President of the Belarusian People's Republic .
biography
Jan Sierada was born in Zadzwiej, a place in what is now Baranavichy Rajon in Belarus. His father was a priest. In 1903 he graduated from a Warsaw Veterans Institute and was drafted into the Russian Army in 1905 , which means he also served in the Russo-Japanese War . Later, Sierada joined the Belarusian Socialist Hramada . From 1907 to 1911 he worked as a teacher at an agricultural school and as a veterinarian.
After serving at the front in World War I , he began to get involved in the Belarusian independence movement. Shortly thereafter, Sierada participated in the establishment of the Belarusian People's Republic and joined the Rada BNR . In 1918 he was elected President of the newly founded republic. When the People's Republic was replaced by the Belarusian Socialist Soviet Republic , Sierada worked in the Ministry of Agriculture.
In the course of the Stalinist purges he was arrested on July 4, 1930 by the NKVD for his nationalist activities and sentenced to five years in prison. He was released on July 9, 1935 and sentenced again to 10 years in prison on December 27, 1941. However, he was released early and the circumstances of his death are considered unclear.
