Jan Techau

Jan Techau (* 1972 in Lübeck ) is a German political scientist . Since January 1, 2018 he has been a Senior Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States in Berlin and heads its European program.

Life

Techau studied political science, public law and English at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and at Pennsylvania State University . From 1999 to 2000 he received a scholarship from the Robert Bosch Stiftung in the Foundation College for International Tasks.

From 2001 to 2006 he worked at the Federal Ministry of Defense as a consultant in the press and information staff. From 2006 he set up the Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European future issues in the German Society for Foreign Policy . From February 2010 he worked for a year as a Research Adviser in the Research Division of the NATO Defense College in Rome.

In February 2011 he moved to Brussels and took over the management of Carnegie Europe , the European office of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace . At Carnegie Europe, he founded the Strategic Europe Blog with former New York Times journalist Judy Dempsey , an English-language online platform for analyzing and commenting on foreign, security and European policy. In 2014 and 2016, Carnegie Europe won the coveted Think Tank of the Year Award from UK magazine Prospect Magazine . From September 2016 to the end of 2017 he headed the Richard C Holbrooke Forum at the American Academy in Berlin .

In May 2017 Techau and his co-author, the former dpa and Bloomberg journalist Leon Mangasarian, published the book "Leadership Germany - Strategy without fear and presumption" in the principle of "serving leadership" for Germany's new foreign policy role ( Servant Leadership) is proposed. Techau is one of the authors of the transatlantic manifesto "Despite everything: America", which appeared in October 2017 in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit.

Techau writes the monthly column "European World" for the CAUSA debate forum of the Berlin Tagesspiegel and he regularly comments on foreign and security policy issues for German and international media. He is married and lives in Berlin.
