Jan W. Morthenson

Jan Wilhelm Morthenson (born April 7, 1940 in Örnsköldsvik ) is a Swedish composer .

Life

He studied composition with Runar Mangs and Ingvar Lidholm and aesthetics with Heinz-Klaus Metzger at Uppsala University . Metzger sharpened his interest and his critical examination of avant-garde ideas. Morthenson is very active in Swedish musical life, he publishes articles in magazines, daily newspapers and on the radio. 1974–1975 he is chairman of the Swedish ISCM section. He lectures at the San Francisco College of Music and the Stockholm Conservatory and holds a number of government offices in the field of music.

Works

Morthenson created over 120 works for various ensembles, whereby in his early pieces in particular the timbre seems more important than the musical expression; later he wrote so-called “metamusic”, which deals critically with genres such as opera, church music or military music.

  • 1984 Energia I for youth orchestra, synthesizer, percussion, electric bass guitar and double bass
