biography

family

Jan ten Doornkaat Koolman was the second of twelve children of Fiepke Olferts Koolman from Midwolda and his wife Annegien ten Doornkaat, the daughter of the merchant Jan ten Doornkaat from Noordbroek. The Koolman family belongs to an ancient Mennonite family in the Netherlands. As was customary at the time, Jan was given the first name of his maternal grandfather as the second son. The surname was also added to the first name, since there was no male descendant in this line and the name would otherwise have been lost.

Jan ten Doornkaat Koolman's father - Fiepke Olferts Koolman - was the tenant of his parents' farm in Midwolda. In 1784 he gave up farming and began making brandy in Pekela near Groningen.

Life

Little is known about Jan ten Doonkaat Koolman's childhood. He grew up with his parents. The uncertain conditions in the country caused him and his brothers to leave the country. Jan and his brothers Scholto, Jakob, Seebo and Uko therefore emigrated to East Frisia in 1800.

He arrived in the north around 1805. He found a friendly welcome from Doede Lübberts Cremer's merchant family, who like him belonged to the Mennonite community. Thanks to his help, ten Doornkaat was able to take over a small distillery at the end of 1805.

On April 10, 1810, he married the daughter of his patron and friend, Antje Doedes Cremer. But already on December 9th, 1810 she died giving birth to her first daughter Antje Cremer ten Doornkaat. Two years later he married Jeikelina Jans Cool for the second time.

The Doornkaat company developed well economically. The original distillery at Osterstraße 230 quickly became too small, the new distillery was built at Neuer Weg 111. The company increasingly prevailed against its competition, sales volumes rose and new properties had to be purchased.

On May 1, 1846, the factory was handed over to his two sons Jan and Fiepko ten Doornkaat Koolmann. The company founder withdrew into private life with his wife and took up residence in the house at Kleine Osterstrasse 29.

Jan ten Doonkaat Koolmann died in 1851 and was buried in the North Cemetery.
