Jane Landers

Jane Gilmer Landers (* 1947 ) is an American historian . Her research focus is on the colonial history of Latin America, the history of the Atlantic World and the history of the Circum-Caribbean region . Among other things, she looks at the various systems of slavery, as well as the role of women and gender aspects in colonial Latin America.

Life

Landers studied at the University of Miami , where he received a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in Latin American Studies in 1968 and a Master of Arts in Inter-American Studies in 1974 . 1988 doctorate it to the University of Florida for Ph.D. in Latin American colonial history. From 1988 to 1991 she taught as Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of Florida. In 1992 she moved to Vanderbilt University . At the Department of History there , she taught from 1992 to 1999 as an assistant professor , from 1999 to 2010 as an associate professor and since 2010 as a professor. As such, she has been Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of History since 2011 . She was also director of the University's Center for Latin American and Iberian Studies from 2000 to 2002 and again from 2011 to 2012, and from 2001 to 2004 she was Associate Dean of the University's College of Arts & Science .

Her book Black Society in Spanish Florida won the Frances B. Simkins Prize of the Southern Historical Association . Landers is a member of the American Society for Ethnohistory , the American Historical Association , the Association of Caribbean Historians , the Brazilian Studies Association , the Conference on Latin American History , the Forum on European Expansion and Global Interaction , the Latin American Studies Association, and the Southern Historical Association .
