Janine is a song by the German rapper Bushido , which is included on his album Von der Skyline zum Bordstein zurück and was released on February 9, 2007 as the third single on the album. Thematically, the song deals with the sexual abuse of minors by members of the parental home. Janine reached number 23 in the German single charts in Germany . The song again received media attention in 2010 as a prominent example of a series of Bushido songs which, according to the judgment of the Hamburg District Court, were based on unauthorized use of melodies by the French neoclassical band Dark Sanctuary and accordingly represented copyright infringements . For this reason, the song has not been allowed to be distributed since then.

The text is about Janine, who has just turned 14, who is raped by her stepfather . It turns out that she is pregnant. When she had the child in her mother's basement in the ninth month of pregnancy, she was desperate and “doesn't know what to do, she no longer knows whether to cry or laugh”. She is scared of being hit by her stepfather for the baby. That's why she puts it in front of a church and runs away. In the near future, however, she regretted leaving her child and was ashamed of it. She continues to fight, but comes with the facts never clear, so it suicide commits: "It's Janine, dishonored by the stepfather, [...] and she remembers back to her child, she does not know what to do, is just to the bridge and ". After the “and” the chorus starts again, the “jumps” are omitted.

According to Bushido, the song was inspired by a television report about the real case of a girl sexually abused by her stepfather.

controversy

Since Bushido illegally sampled the song Les Mémoires Blessées by the French neoclassical band Dark Sanctuary in Janine and also illegally used the band's melodies on 15 other songs, Bushido was sentenced in 2010 by the Hamburg District Court to 63,000 euros in damages. In addition, the court prohibited future distribution of the single and ten other CDs or samplers . Particularly affected was the album Von der Skyline zum Bordstein zurück , on which, in addition to Janine , seven other titles by the artist included in the judgment were published. Since then , Janine is no longer allowed to be published on video portals such as YouTube .

Music video

The music video shows the lyrics. An older Janine is shown who remembers the time when she was raped and beaten by her stepfather and abandoned her baby. At the end of the video she is standing at a bridge, about to jump, but, in contrast to the text, decides differently and leaves. The video with the song was published on YouTube with a different beat.

In Germany Janine reached number 23 in the singles charts, in Austria number 35. In Germany, the song stayed in the charts for nine weeks and in Austria for seven weeks.

criticism

Philipp Gässlein from laut.de says that Janine is a “real storytelling sweet”. On the snippet , the title is not that "deep", but if you could hear it completely, Bushido conveyed the "hopeless situation" very well. The most ingenious thing about the song is the chorus with the "melody and then [the] whispering second voice of Bushido". The omitted "jumps" at the end put the loop on the atmosphere.
