Jann Schmidt

Jann Schmidt (born October 24, 1948 in Weener ) is a German Reformed theologian . From May 1, 2004 to October 31, 2013, he was Church President of the Evangelical Reformed Church . When he reached the age of 65, he retired in accordance with the church constitution.

Jann Schmidt studied Protestant theology in Wuppertal , Bochum and Göttingen . After a two-year vicariate, Schmidt received his first pastorate in the Reformed community of Veenhusen in 1977 . From 1981 he was a school pastor at the grammar schools in Leer . In 1984 he became the regional youth pastor of the Reformed Church. Since 1990 he worked there as a pastor for public relations. In 2003 the general synod elected him to the newly created office of church president of the Evangelical Reformed Church. Previously, in the Evangelical Reformed Church, the leading clergyman (the state superintendent) and the leading lawyer (the president) had equal rights. In May 2004 Schmidt took up his twelve-year term of office. In October 2009 Schmidt was elected to the EKD Council.

Schmidt has been the author of the Internet platform Göttingen Sermons on the Internet since 2008 .

Jann Schmidt is married and has three grown sons.
