Regional bishop
Regional Bishop is the title of the spiritual director of some Protestant regional churches in Germany. The term arose from the introduction of the sovereign church regiment during the Reformation . Rulers who enforced the introduction of the new confession for their country subsequently exercised all the rights of a bishop for their territory, hence the term regional bishop , also summus episcŏpus ( Latin for: "supreme bishop"). With the end of the monarchy after the First World War , the sovereign church regiment ceased to exist in 1918 . Since then, the synod in some regional churches has chosen a theologian to be the regional bishop as the competent body . Other regional churches know the bishop or the president , church president or secretary as the leading spiritual office . At the end of the 1980s, women were elected to leadership positions for the first time .
