Bärbel Wartenberg-Potter

Bärbel Wartenberg-Potter (born September 16, 1943 in Pirmasens / Pfalz ) was one of the three bishops of the North Elbe Evangelical Lutheran Church (NEK) from 2001 to 2008 . She was the Sprengel responsible Holstein Lübeck. After her colleagues Maria Jepsen (North Elbian Church, Sprengel Hamburg) and Margot Käßmann (State Bishop Hanover), she was the third German Lutheran bishop.

Life stations

From 1963 to 1968 she studied German and theology , graduating as a teacher and first theological service examination in the Evangelical Church in Württemberg . In 1976 she was ordained a pastor in the Württemberg regional church and became a director of studies at the center for development-related educational work of the regional church in Stuttgart . In 1980 she moved to Geneva as director of the Women in Church and Society department of the World Council of Churches (WCC) . From 1985 to 1990 Wartenberg-Potter taught at the University of the West Indies and at the same time served as the university pastor in Kingston / Jamaica .

In 1991 she moved to a parish office in Stuttgart-Botnang in the dean's office in Stuttgart-Mitte. From 1997 to 2001 she was the managing director of the Working Group of Christian Churches in Germany , based in Frankfurt am Main .

From 2001 to 2008 she was bishop of the Holstein -Lübeck district of the North Elbe Evangelical Lutheran Church. The bishop's church was the Lübeck cathedral . On July 6, 2008, she retired, which she officially entered on September 30, 2008.

From 1985 until his death in 2015, Wartenberg-Potter was married to the former general secretary of the World Council of Churches Philip Potter . She lives in Lübeck .

Since 2009 she has been chairwoman of the board of trustees of the Institute for Theological Zoology in Münster and since 2011 patron of the association "Orphaned Parents and Mourning Siblings Schleswig-Holstein eV" in Schleswig-Holstein.
