Kristina Kühnbaum-Schmidt

Kristina Kühnbaum-Schmidt , b. Kühnbaum (born September 24, 1964 in Braunschweig ) is a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman . Since April 1, 2019, she has been the regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany . She was introduced to her office on Whit Monday, June 10, 2019, in a festive service in Schwerin Cathedral by Ralf Meister , the leading bishop of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany and regional bishop of Hanover.

Life

Kristina Kühnbaum grew up in Sickte near Braunschweig. She studied Protestant theology at the University of Göttingen and the Church University of Berlin . From 1990 to 1992 she was a university assistant for modern and contemporary church history and a research assistant at Gerhard Besier in Berlin . In this capacity she was among other things responsible for the creation of the bibliography on ecclesiastical and general contemporary history in the journal Kirchliche Zeitgeschichte . In 1990 she passed her first and in 1995 her second theological exam. In 1995 she was ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig . From 1995 to 2002 she worked as a pastor for the Wicherngemeinde in Lehndorf / Kanzlerfeld , from 2002 to 2004 in public relations at the provost of Braunschweig with part-time work in religious instruction and from 2004 to 2013 at St. Petri in Braunschweig. After completing an additional qualification in 2007 as a pastoral psychological advisor and supervisor (German Society for Pastoral Psychology / Depth Psychology Section), from 2009 she was also a pastoral psychological advisor and supervisor of her regional church and lecturer for pastoral care at the preacher's seminar .

From April 2013 she was the successor of Marita Krüger regional bishop of the Propstsprengels Meiningen-Suhl of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany based in Meiningen . In 2015 she was elected to the leadership of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany (VELKD). She is a member of the 12th synod of the EKD .

In 2018 she was proposed together with the Hamburg provost Karl-Heinrich Melzer as a candidate to succeed Regional Bishop Gerhard Ulrich . In the election during the autumn meeting of the synod in Lübeck Cathedral on September 27, 2018, Kühnbaum-Schmidt achieved the required majority in the first ballot with 90 out of 150 votes. She took office on April 1, 2019.

Kühnbaum-Schmidt was elected Deputy Head Bishop of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany (VELKD) in November 2019 . She is the representative of the leading bishop Ralf Meister and succeeds Carsten Rentzing , who resigned as regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran regional church of Saxony in October.

Kristina Kühnbaum-Schmidt is married to Pastor Güntzel Schmidt. The couple has a grown daughter.
