Christian Schad (theologian)

Christian Schad (born February 14, 1958 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a German Protestant theologian and since December 2008 Church President of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate , based in Speyer .

After studying theology in Bethel, Bonn and Tübingen, church preparatory service and ordination , Christian Schad took over the pastoral position in Weingarten together with his wife Gerlinde Wnuck-Schad in 1986 , together with student pastoral care at the Department of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies in Germersheim . In 1991 he became a theological consultant in the regional church council in Speyer with a focus on ecumenism , judaica , worship , liturgical work , agendas , hymn books , church music , training and further training for predicants .

In 1996 Schad became a lecturer at the Protestant Preachers' Seminar in Landau in the Palatinate . His focus in the training of vicars there was on homiletics , liturgy , hymnology and pastoral care .

In 1999 he was appointed senior church councilor and since then has been a department head in the regional church council for the areas of worship , church music , diakonia , ecumenism , missionary services and pastoral care .

In May 2008, Schad was elected Church President of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate. On December 1, he replaced Eberhard Cherdron , who retired for reasons of age. In November 2019, Schad announced that he would give up his office early in February 2021.

After he had already assumed the deputy chairmanship in 2012, the full conference of the Union of Evangelical Churches (UEK) elected him chairman in early November 2013.

From 2015 to 2018 he was the Protestant leader of the series of consultations on the subject of "Church and Church Fellowship " between the Community of Evangelical Churches in Europe (CPCE) and the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity .

In January 2019 Schad received an honorary doctorate from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and in March he was awarded the honor plaque of the city of Landau for his diverse and social commitment in the church and community .
