Tobias Bilz

Christian Tobias Bilz (born April 28, 1964 in Dornreichenbach ) is a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian . He has been regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony (EvLKS) since March 1, 2020 .

Career

Tobias Bilz is the third of four sons of the pastor Wolfgang Bilz and his wife Ingeburg Ursula, who all followed the professional example of their father. After graduating from the Polytechnic High School in Pleißa near Chemnitz, Bilz completed an apprenticeship as a maintenance mechanic in Altenburg from 1980 to 1983 . He then began studying Protestant theology at the Theological Seminary in Leipzig . After completing his vicariate in the parishes of Limbach-Oberfrohna and the Pauli-Kreuz parish of Chemnitz , he completed his studies in 1991 with the second theological exam .

Tobias Bilz's ordination as a pastor took place on June 16, 1991 in the Erlbach-Kirchberg parish near Stollberg (Erzg.) , Which he looked after until 2007. In 2001 he was appointed youth pastor in the Stollberg church district and from 2007 to 2018 he was a full-time state youth pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony (EvLKS). In May 2015 Tobias Bilz stood for the election of the Saxon regional bishop, which he lost in the sixth ballot with 38 to 40 votes against Carsten Rentzing .

In 2018 he was appointed to the Oberlandeskirchenrat in the Landeskirchenamt in Dresden , Department IV (community development, pastoral care and media) as successor to Dietrich Bauer. As area head of department, he was also responsible for the church districts of Leipzig, Leipziger Land, Leisnig-Oschatz and Glauchau-Rochlitz.

On February 29, 2020, at the suggestion of the church leadership, he stood next to Andreas Beuchel and Ulrike Weyer for the election of regional bishop of the EvLKS. In the third ballot, Tobias Bilz was elected regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony with 48 out of 79 votes. The inauguration by Ralf Meister , the leading bishop of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD), took place on April 25, 2020 in the Meissen Cathedral .

Tobias Bilz says he is a member of the Brotherhood Liemehna eV, the Evangelical Montessori School Association Erlbach-Kirchberg eV (sponsoring membership), the German Alpine Association eV and FC Bayern München eV He lives in Dresden, is married and has three grown children.
