Bishop Christian Stäblein

Christian Stäblein (born November 1, 1967 in Bad Pyrmont , Lower Saxony ) is a German Evangelical - Lutheran theologian and since November 16, 2019 Bishop of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia .

Live and act

Christian Stäblein is the son of Renate Löhr and stepson of Oda-Gebbine Holze-Stäblein . He grew up in Hanover and, after graduating from high school, initially devoted himself to law . Then he took up the study of Protestant theology and combined it with secondary studies in the subjects of Jewish Studies , Philosophy , History and Law in Göttingen, Berlin and Jerusalem. After completing his studies and the two theological exams, he was pastor in the parish in Lengede in the Peine district .

From 2001 to 2005 Stäblein was a research assistant at the Chair of Practical Theology at the University of Göttingen , where he received his doctorate in 2002 with a dissertation on the subject of preaching after the Holocaust . From April 2005 he was pastor at St. Martins Church in Nienburg an der Weser . In December 2007 he was appointed Conventual Director of Studies of the Loccum Preachers' Seminar of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hanover and took up the post in April 2008. During his time, the seminary developed into a joint training center for the Protestant churches in Lower Saxony and Bremen. From 2013 to spring 2018 he was a member of the editorial team of the Göttingen Sermon Meditations. He has been publishing the sermon studies since autumn 2018.

Stäblein was elected provost in the first ballot on November 14, 2014 by the Synod of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia (EKBO) . As provost, he was the theological director of the EKBO consistory in Berlin and was therefore responsible for fundamental theological issues. Department 2 in the consistory, "Theology and Church Life", which he heads, also includes the coordination of the content of various work areas, including a. Diakonie, ecumenism and journalism as well as the EKBO media house. He was also the bishop's deputy. He took office as provost on August 16, 2015. Its introduction took place on September 4, 2015 in the St. Bartholomew Church in Berlin-Friedrichshain .

On April 5, 2019, he was elected by the regional synod in the second ballot with a two-thirds majority to succeed Markus Dröge as Bishop of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia. On November 16, 2019, Stäblein was introduced to the office of bishop in the Marienkirche in Berlin.

Christian Stäblein is married to Anke Stäblein and has four children.
