Eberhard Cherdron

Eberhard Cherdron (born November 7, 1943 in Speyer ) is a Protestant theologian and was church president of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate (Protestant regional church) from 1998 to 2008 .

Life and career

Cherdron was born the son of a pastor. He grew up with three siblings in Hochstadt (Palatinate) and Kandel . After leaving school, he studied theology from 1963 to 1967 at the universities of Tübingen , Heidelberg , Göttingen and Mainz . His subsequent vicariate and his first pastoral position were in Bexbach and Homburg . From 1970 he studied economics and graduated in 1974 from the University of Mannheim with a degree in economics. From 1974 to 1977 he was pastor in Neuhofen (Palatinate) until he was called to the state youth pastor in Kaiserslautern .

From 1984 he headed the Diaconal Work of the Palatinate in Speyer until the regional synod of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate elected him to the senior church council in Speyer in 1989 . There he took on the function of a human resources officer. Nine years later (1998) Cherdron was elected by the regional synod as church president of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate. He thus succeeded Werner Schramm , who was retiring. After the end of his seven-year term in office, the regional synod elected him again as church president in 2005 with 55 out of 64 votes. He thus took up his second term in office in September 2005. He retired on November 30, 2008 at the age of 65. His previous deputy, Oberkirchenrat Christian Schad, was appointed as his successor in May 2008 .

Cherdron was adopted on December 7, 2008 at a ceremony in Speyer.

Cherdron is married to Dorothea and has four children. In his spare time he plays the piano, recorder and viola da gamba.

Honorary positions

Cherdron is among other things chairman of the council of the Diakonisches Werk of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and member of the media committee of the EKD. He is also chairman of the regional association for internal mission in Bad Dürkheim .
