Peter Bermel and Arthur B. Ford , who led a United States Geological Survey expedition to the Thiel Mountains from 1960 to 1961, named him after Lieutenant George Janulis, pilot of the United States Navy VX-6 squadron who joined the group Thiel Mountains had flown.
