List of domestic dogs

The Japanese Chin ( Japanese , Chin ) is a Japanese dog breed recognized by the FCI ( No. 206, Gr. 9, Sec. 8 ) .

origin

Chin is an abbreviation from chiinu , which in turn represents one from chiichi inu , Japanese for "small dog". The character itself was not taken from Chinese, but created in Japan ( Kokuji ) and means "dog ( ) who is inside ( )".

A dog that resembles today's Chin can already be recognized 1000 years ago on Japanese pictures, bronzes and other handicrafts. How today's Chin came about is controversial. The rule was: the smaller this dog, the more valuable. He was the most popular dog of the Japanese nobility, almost everyone had a breed .

The Japanese Chin is held in high regard in Japan . When the dogs came to Europe is uncertain. From 1860 on, individual dogs kept coming to England . The first couple came to Germany in 1880 as a Christmas present from the Japanese Empress to Empress Augusta . Nowadays it is almost forgotten here.

Appearance

The appearance of the noble dwarf dog is elegant, compact, short-nosed, with an oriental expression. A Japan Chin moves with style and has a thick coat with a feathery tail carried over the back. The outline of the dog shows a square appearance. The shoulder height is about 25 cm. Its color is white / black or white / red.

Health problems

Wegner named trichiasis and distichiasis as quite common diseases in 1979. The Japanese Chin belongs to the brachycephalic races and has corresponding health problems. The breed is more heavily affected by clouding of the lens of the eye ( cataract ).

character

The Japanese Chin has a very gentle nature, he is calm and pleasant. He is also suitable as a city dog.

Reception in art

Around 1875, the French painter Édouard Manet created the artist's impression of a Japan Chin with the painting Tama, a Japanese dog .
