Wilhelm Wegner

Wilhelm Wegner (born January 15, 1898 in Thorn , † November 2, 1972 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German ophthalmologist and from 1934 to 1966 director of the Freiburg University Eye Clinic.

Career

Wegner took part in the First World War as a war volunteer . In 1916 he was promoted to lieutenant in the reserve. From 1919 to 1923 he studied medicine at the Universities of Marburg and Greifswald. In 1922 he passed the first state examination at the University of Greifswald and was awarded a Dr. med. PhD . Subsequently he assisted Walther Löhlein there . From 1920 to 1925 Wegner was a member of the German National People's Party and the Stahlhelm . This was followed by his habilitation in 1927 , before he moved to Freiburg im Breisgau together with Löhlein in 1932, where he had been offered the management of the local eye clinic. In 1933 Wegner became a member of the NSDAP . In January 1934 he was also appointed steward of the NSDAP at the Medical Faculty in Freiburg. When Löhlein was appointed to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin in 1934 , Wegner was appointed full professor of ophthalmology and head of the eye clinic at the University of Freiburg in his successor . According to Jens Martin Rohrbach , Wegner's closeness to NS was of decisive importance. Until his retirement in 1966, Wegner remained medical director of the Freiburg University Eye Clinic. In the years 1935–1937 he was also dean of the medical faculty.
