KK Japan Display ( Japanese 株式会社 ジ ャ パ ン デ ィ ス プ レ イ , Kabushiki kaisha Japan Disupurei , English Japan Display Inc. , short: JDI) is a joint venture of the Japanese companies Sony , Toshiba and Hitachi , which manufactures liquid crystal displays (LCD).

history

The state-dominated PPP company Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) funded the merger of the LCD businesses of Hitachi, Sony and Toshiba with 200 billion yen to form the new joint company Japan Display Inc., based in Tokyo , Japan . The corresponding agreement was passed on November 15, 2011. Also on November 15, 2011, INCJ and Panasonic Corporation agreed to purchase an LCD manufacturing facility from Panasonic for the new company JDI. JDI started operations on April 1, 2012.

On March 19, 2014, JDI became a public company through an IPO , the shares have since been traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The company's business data was published for the IPO and is now also available on its website. Among other things, it was reported that JDI is the main supplier of LCDs for the Apple iPhone (as of 2014).

The company has not yet made a profit since going public. It was announced that a production line in Japan will have to close. A third of the workforce is expected to be laid off.

JDI has created a number of innovations to differentiate itself from the competition:

  • For matrix displays controlled by thin film transistors (TFTs) were thanks to the use of low temperature polysilicon ( low-temperature poly-silicon fabricated instead of the previous amorphous silicon powerful transistors = "LTPS"), and thus the resolution of the displays are increased by smaller geometries.
  • The vast majority of LCDs manufactured by JDI work according to the in-plane switching principle (IPS), which is also the case with many competitors. However, JDI has further developed this technology so that dark picture elements ( pixels ) appear darker ( true-black appearance with "IPS-NEO"), as less unwanted light from the backlight shines through.
  • In the case of touch- controlled devices, a transparent touchscreen film is usually placed in front of the liquid crystal display. JDI has managed to get by without this upstream part, in that the LCD itself can also perform this task. JDI calls this improved technology "Pixel Eyes".
  • JDI has developed a new type of control technology for purely reflective LCDs without background lighting. Each TFT is additionally assigned a thin-film storage element (an SRAM ) so that the image information of static images can be stored in the display itself. As a result, the power consumption can be reduced significantly with static image information, which is important for certain portable devices (e.g. wristwatches).
