The Kaijō Hoan-chō ( Japanese about "Authority for Safety at Sea"; written 海上 保安 庁 , abbreviated 海 保 kaiho or historically ambiguous 保安 庁 hoanchō ; English before 2000: Maritime Safety Agency of Japan , abbreviated MSA or JMSA, since 2000 : Japan Coast Guard , abbreviated JCG) is the coast guard of the state of Japan .

General

The authority is an independent office ( gaikyoku ) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism with headquarters in Central Government Building No. 3 in Tokyo 's Kasumigaseki district in Chiyoda , Tokyo Prefecture and has around 12,000 employees. Their tasks are the protection and monitoring of coastal waters, the safety of shipping, sea rescue and disaster control.

The Kaijō Hoan-chō was set up under the Ashida cabinet in 1948 during the occupation of the then Ministry of Transport . In 1952, part of the Kaiho was spun off into the new security authority , from which two years later the defense authority and the self- defense forces emerged .
