The Japanese Quince ( Chaenomeles japonica ) is a plant from the genus of Zierquitten ( Chaenomeles ) in the family of Rosaceae (Rosaceae).
features
The Japanese ornamental quince is a bulky shrub with thorns and widely spreading branches that reaches heights of 0.6 to 2.0 meters. Young twigs are short-felted, twigs from the previous year are warty. The leaves are lanceolate to obovate, roughly toothed and glabrous even when young. They are 4 to 5 inches long and 2 to 3 inches wide , including the petiole . The unusually large stipules are 1 centimeter long and 1.5 to 2 centimeters wide, kidney-shaped and serrated on the edge; they are only found on long shoots. Usually 2 to 3 flowers are arranged together; they are colored orange to brick red. When open, the flowers are 3 to 4 centimeters wide. The fruits are 4–7 centimeters in diameter and yellow.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.
Occurrence
This species occurs in Japan .
use
The Japanese quince is used as an ornamental shrub. She has been in culture since 1874.
The fruits are not edible raw, but as with all fruits of the rose family, the pulp is non-toxic and the seeds contain small amounts of poison. The fragrant, hard-fleshed fruits can be stored for a long time and can therefore be placed between handkerchiefs or undershirts in the linen cupboard to transfer scents. There are many more seeds in their core than in apples.
The pulp is very spicy and contains sugar and ascorbic acid, among other things. A popular method of preparation is to cook it as a fruity seasoning in elderberry soup.
