Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Japan)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Japanese 外務 省 , Gaimu-shō , dt. "Ministry of Foreign Affairs", English Ministry of Foreign Affairs , MOFA for short ) is one of the ministries of the Japanese government , responsible for the foreign policy of Japan .

It was created during the modernization of the Japanese government in 1885 and has been led by a minister ( 大臣 , Daijin ) ever since . The current foreign minister has been Motegi Toshimitsu since September 2019 .

There are five regional divisions in Gaimu-shō: Asia and Oceania, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, the Near / Middle East and Africa. These departments are each headed by a director general and are subdivided into further regional departments and a separate department for the security treaty with the USA , which plays a central role in Japanese alliance policy.

Foreign service

The career in the Foreign Service of Japan has been one that has been associated with high social prestige since the Meiji period . Many diplomats were graduates of the Imperial University of Tokyo or today's University of Tokyo .
